Seeking Deeper Understanding #014

SDTEST® has 28 different VUCA polls that calculate the 9,191 correlation values between stages of development according to the theory of Spiral Dynamics and answer options of these 28 polls.

We invite curiosity about the systemic mechanisms behind this correlation. There may be hidden variables that provide alternative explanations.

In our analysis of the poll "A.I. and the end of civilization (Elon Musk)," we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.1226 between The state should exercise control over the development of artificial intelligence / Somewhat disagree and the Purple stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0872. This negative correlation of -0.1226 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.1226 exceeds the critical value of 0.0872, meets the reliability criteria for further examination, and could be explained that those more aligned with the Purple value system may be more inclined to support state control over AI development. This aligns with the Purple stage's emphasis on tradition, hierarchy, and the belief in the authority of influential leaders or deities.

In the Purple value system context, the development of artificial intelligence may be seen as a threat to the established order, traditions, and the influence of traditional sources of authority. Individuals in the Purple stage may be more likely to favor state control over AI development to preserve the existing social and spiritual structures that provide a sense of stability and belonging.

This negative correlation highlights the potential tension between the Purple stage's emphasis on tradition and the perceived disruptive nature of technological advancements like AI. Individuals in the Purple stage may be more inclined to support measures that maintain the status quo and reinforce the authority of traditional sources of power and influence.

The Purple value system strongly focuses on tradition, spirituality, and a belief in the supernatural. Individuals in this stage have a strong sense of community and are guided by their ancestors' laws, beliefs, and rituals. They tend to have a strong sense of identity and belonging to their group, and they often look to influential, all-knowing leaders or gods for guidance and direction.

In our analysis of the poll "Ageism in Career," we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.1405 between the No, the organization does not benefit from having a working group to keep the conversation on ageism, and the Red stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0855. This positive correlation of 0.1405 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.1405 exceeds the critical value of 0.0855, meets the reliability criteria for further examination, and could be explained that individuals at the Red stage may view initiatives aimed at addressing societal or organizational challenges, such as ageism, as less relevant or essential compared to their immediate pursuits of power, self-expression, and personal gratification.

The Red value system is characterized by a strong focus on power, self-expression, individualism, and a desire for immediate gratification. Individuals operating primarily from this worldview tend to be driven by their impulses, desires, and a sense of dominance. They are often competitive, assertive, and willing to use force or coercive means to achieve their goals, with little concern for established rules or laws.

In this correlation, the lack of perceived value in having a working group address ageism could resonate with the Red vMeme's emphasis on individual assertiveness, self-interest, and a potential disregard for collective or systemic issues that may not directly align with personal goals or desires.

Additionally, the Red value system's tendencies towards impulsiveness and a focus on immediate results could contribute to a perception that efforts to address complex issues like ageism through structured working groups may be seen as inefficient or ineffective from their perspective.

In our analysis of the poll "Ageism’s causes," we found an intriguing positive correlation that warrants closer examination:

0.1223 between the No, interpersonal interactions do not reflect broader social attitudes, and Blue stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0921. This positive correlation of 0.1223 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This positive correlation of 0.1223 is statistically significant, surpassing the critical value of 0.0921, and could be interpreted as a reflection of the strict compartmentalization of different spheres of life.

Individuals at the Blue stage may strongly believe in following established rules and hierarchies, leading them to separate interpersonal interactions from broader societal attitudes.

In the Blue value system, there is a clear distinction between the personal and the societal realms, each governed by its own rules and codes of conduct. Interpersonal interactions may fall within the personal domain, subject to individual responsibilities and moral codes. At the same time, broader social attitudes are seen as part of the larger societal structure governed by higher authorities and traditions.

This separation may stem from a belief in the inherent order of things and a strict adherence to the roles and responsibilities assigned to each individual within the hierarchical structure. Personal duties and obligations guide interpersonal interactions, while broader social attitudes are dictated by the moral code and traditions handed down from higher authorities.

It is important to note that this correlation does not necessarily reflect a lack of concern for social issues or a disregard for broader societal attitudes. Instead, it may manifest the Blue value system's emphasis on maintaining clear boundaries and following established norms and traditions within each sphere of life.

In our analysis of the poll "Ageism in Life," we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.1750 between the I notice ageism in personal life and the Orange stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0858. This negative correlation of -0.1750 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.1750 is statistically significant, surpassing the critical value of 0.0858. Individuals more aligned with the Orange value system may be less likely to perceive or be affected by ageism in their personal experiences.

This could be due to a few potential factors:
  1. The Orange stage's emphasis on meritocracy and individual achievement may lead to a belief that age is less relevant than one's abilities and accomplishments.
  2. The rational, analytical mindset of the Orange stage may make individuals less attuned to the nuances of interpersonal dynamics and social biases.
  3. The Orange stage's focus on progress and efficiency may prioritize objective performance measures over subjective perceptions of age-related discrimination.
This negative correlation highlights a potential disconnect between the Orange stage's emphasis on reason and ageism's more subjective, interpersonal nature. Individuals in the Orange stage may be less inclined to recognize or be affected by ageism in their personal lives, potentially due to their focus on individual achievement and reliance on rational, scientific approaches to problem-solving.

The Orange value system is focused on reason, science, and technology. Individuals in this stage are ambitious, goal-oriented, and driven by a desire for knowledge and understanding. They value progress, efficiency, and results and use rational, logical thinking and scientific methods to achieve their objectives.

In our analysis of the poll "Oxford Happiness Survey," we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.1816 between the Life is good / Strongly Agree and the Green stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0587. This negative correlation of -0.1816 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.1816 is statistically significant, surpassing the critical value of 0.0587. It could be explained that those more aligned with the Green value system may be less likely to express a strong, unequivocal agreement with the sentiment that "Life is good."

This could be due to a few potential factors:
  1. The Green stage's emphasis on holistic, systems thinking may lead individuals to view life and well-being through a more nuanced, contextual lens rather than a simplistic "life is good" perspective.
  2. The Green stage's concern for the well-being of all, rather than just the individual, may make individuals more attuned to the challenges and inequities that exist in society, tempering a sense of universal life satisfaction.
  3. The Green stage's focus on sustainability and long-term thinking may lead individuals to be more cautious or critical in assessing the current state of life rather than expressing unqualified optimism.
This negative correlation highlights a potential disconnect between the Green stage's emphasis on community, ecology, and the well-being of all and the more individualistic, simplistic assessment of "life is good." It suggests that individuals in the Green stage may have a more complex, nuanced view of life and well-being, which may not align with a straightforward, positive assessment.

The Green value system is characterized by a holistic, systems-thinking approach that emphasizes community, ecology, unity, and well-being. Individuals in this stage are deeply concerned about society's interconnectedness and the need for cooperation and sustainability.

In our analysis of the poll "Psychological Wellbeing (by Carol D. Ryff)," we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.1415 between the Purpose in life. I enjoy making plans for the future and working to make them a reality / Strongly agree, and the Yellow stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0543. This negative correlation of -0.1415 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.1415 is statistically significant, surpassing the critical value of 0.0543. It could be explained that those more aligned with the Yellow value system may be less likely to express a strong, unequivocal agreement with this sentiment.

This could be due to a few potential factors:
  1. The Yellow stage's emphasis on personal growth and development may lead individuals to view purpose and planning for the future in a more nuanced, flexible way rather than a rigid, goal-oriented approach.
  2. The Yellow stage's ability to see multiple perspectives may make individuals more aware of the complexities and uncertainties inherent in planning for the future, tempering a sense of certainty about one's purpose.
  3. The Yellow stage's holistic, integrative approach may lead individuals to view purpose and life planning as part of a broader, interconnected system rather than a standalone, individual pursuit.
This negative correlation highlights a potential disconnect between the Yellow stage's emphasis on personal growth, complexity, and systems thinking and a more straightforward, goal-oriented approach to finding purpose in life. It suggests that individuals in the Yellow stage may have a more nuanced, flexible understanding of purpose and life planning, which may not align with a robust and unequivocal agreement with such statements.

In our analysis of the poll "Trust (by WVS)," we found an intriguing negative correlation that warrants closer examination:

-0.2036 between the People of another nationality / Do not trust very much, and the Turquoise stage.

The critical value of the correlation coefficient for a normal distribution, by William Sealy Gosset (Student) r = 0.0693. This negative correlation of -0.2036 meets the reliability criteria but does not necessarily imply causation.

This negative correlation of -0.2036 is statistically significant, surpassing the critical value of 0.0693. It could be explained that those more aligned with the Turquoise value system may be more inclined to trust and embrace people from different nationalities. This aligns with the Turquoise stage's emphasis on the interconnectedness of all things and recognizing all people's inherent worth and dignity, regardless of national origin.

Focusing on the interconnectedness of all things and recognizing the interdependence of human and natural systems characterizes the Turquoise value system. Individuals in this stage are holistic, integrative, and concerned with the well-being of both people and the planet. They value diversity, tolerance, and inclusiveness and deeply connect to nature and the more expansive universe.

This negative correlation highlights the Turquoise stage's holistic, inclusive, and ecological perspective. Individuals in this stage may be more likely to see the common humanity in people from different backgrounds and to recognize the interdependence and shared responsibility for the well-being of the global community.

Furthermore, the Turquoise stage's focus on sustainability and harmony with the natural world may also contribute to a more open and trusting attitude towards people of different nationalities, as they recognize the need for cooperation and collaboration to address global challenges.

This insight from the negative correlation provides valuable information about the values, beliefs, and perspectives associated with the Turquoise stage in Spiral Dynamics.
